In celebration of 30 years of improvement, the Joint Advisory Group on GI Endoscopy (JAG) has released its first ever annual report.

The report serves as an opportunity to demonstrate what JAG has achieved across its accreditation, training and data programmes in 2024, and how we are progressing against our 3-year development plan, both to our stakeholders and the wider endoscopy community.

Key statistics

Below are some key statistics to provide an insight to the work achieved across JAG in 2024:

517 services across UK and Ireland are now JAG-registered, of which 223 are accredited. In 2024, JAG undertook 92 site assessments, and 134 services completed an annual review.
Since 2023, 81 colonoscopists have been accredited as bowel cancer screeners by our 40 assessors, taking the total to 652 screening colonoscopists in the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.
98% of endoscopy sites in the UK (535) are currently uploading procedure data to NED, with over 11 million procedures uploaded, accruing at around 200,000 a month.
In 2024, JAG recruited 51 new technical assessors (management, medical and nurse), bringing our total to 96, along with recruiting 20 new lay assessors.
The proportion of all procedures involving a trainee has increased significantly from 8% in 2023 to 11% in 2024.
Gastroenterology trainees are gaining certification in a lower year of training in 2024, which has not been seen for surgical trainees.
There are now 9,286 users of the JETS Workforce website from 431 units, with 1796 delegates attending 104 ENDO courses in 2024.
JAG is progressing well against its three-year development plan: of 81 projects, 22 have been completed. The remaining projects are in progress or not yet started.

The Joint Advisory Group on GI Endoscopy (JAG)

JAG was established in 1994, under the auspices of the Academy of Royal Medical Colleges. JAG is a clinically led, independent endoscopy stakeholder organisation, hosted by the RCP but representing many organisations. JAG acts an independent voice for all endoscopy delivered in the UK and the Republic of Ireland, supporting the endoscopy community in the delivery of high-quality endoscopy. For the service it means a sense of pride in being able to show that they offer a high quality and safe service.

We JAG are delighted to release the 2024 annual report that gives perspective both on how we work to standardise and ensure quality in endoscopy training and how best we can improve future development in endoscopy. We hope and ask that the report will be shared widely within the endoscopy community and across our stakeholders, as we continue to strive provide to delivering high quality, patient-centred care.

JETS administration and clerical working group

We are looking for members to join our newly formed JETS administration and clerical (JETS A&C) working group.

JETS administration and clerical working group

The JETS administration and clerical (JETS A&C) team is looking for members to join our newly formed working group. JETS A&C is a competency framework that aims to ensure that the administrative workforce is equipped with the skills and knowledge to do their jobs and to support greater efficiency in endoscopy booking and scheduling. When the framework was first developed, a working group was put in place to develop the content of the framework and roll it out to NHS endoscopy training academies across England.

Working group meetings will be chaired by the JETS A&C lead and supported by the JAG operational team, and we are looking for representation from regional endoscopy academies, including devolved nations. The group will meet every 6 to 8 weeks depending on the needs of the programme.

NED service champion role

Request for NED Service Champions at endoscopy sites.

NED service champion role

The JAG data and training team are requesting NED Service Champions for endoscopy sites.

NED is populated by data extracted automatically from the endoscopy reporting system (ERS) at endoscopy services in the UK. NED makes data available in user friendly outputs for clinicians, services and for research purposes. The aim of NED is to support and enable improved quality assurance in endoscopy, to enhance JETS (JAG Endoscopy Training System), removing the need for double data-entry for trainees and to offer potential for research by providing a central store of key endoscopy data.

The NED service champion will act as the point of contact for NED queries from endoscopists at their endoscopy unit, promoting and encouraging the use of NED in their unit. More information, including the purpose of the role and required criteria, can be found in the role description.

The role is an honorary role and the postholder will not receive any financial reimbursement for acting as a NED champion.

Any individual who is interested in becoming a NED service champion should speak to their endoscopy manager, endoscopy lead or unit manager. Unit managers should also approach any member of staff they think would be suitable for the role and has capacity within their work schedule.
