"As part of the TEL vision to streamline our services and provide a single learning management system for all health and social care colleagues, we are preparing to move elfh programmes to the Learning Hub over the next few months, starting with Statutory and Mandatory training at the end of October. Remaining programmes will relocate afterwards. 

As we move elfh programmes to the Learning Hub, learners will access the relocated programmes on the Learning Hub. Programmes that are yet to move can continue to be accessed on the elfh Hub. 

Prior to programmes relocating, learners will be asked to complete any unfinished sessions on the elfh Hub as their progress will not be carried over to the Learning Hub. Where programmes are undertaken on the elfh Hub, learners can view their activity as usual. Learning activity in the Learning Hub can be found in ‘My learning’." 

As mentioned above, all current accounts on elfh will be able to login using the same credentials on the Learning Hub. However, any partially completed modules and certificates will not be saved in this move. 

Users who utilise the eIntegrity portal will be unaffected.

Fraser Brown is a gastroenterology specialty trainee currently based at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust. Fraser delivers regular endoscopy training and is learning more complex polypectomy and therapeutic skills, as well as contributing to the ongoing inpatient and outpatient care of gastro patients.

We asked Fraser some questions so our service users can get to know him a bit more. He also provides an insight into what he hopes to bring to the role:

How and why did you get into endoscopy as a career?

I have been involved in medical education since 2012, teaching medical students and resident doctors in various forms. I started gastro specialty training in 2018 and was certified in gastroscopy and colonoscopy as part of the programme. This gave me the opportunity to combine my interest in endoscopy with training, and I completed a train the trainer course shortly after.

I have been lucky to have the opportunity to take time out of programme as an endoscopy fellow with the Northern Endoscopy Training Academy. I have been regularly involved in the delivery of dedicated and ad hoc training, supporting the academy’s immersion training and collecting data from JETS to quality assure the academy’s work.

I enjoy the practical skill of performing endoscopy and the dynamic teamworking environment of a procedure room where you can directly contribute to the patient’s care journey, either by reassuring them, providing important diagnoses or providing emergency treatment. I find training others in these skills hugely rewarding and enjoy seeing fellow endoscopy trainees progress.

Do you have any achievements you are proud of from working within the sector?

I am fortunate to have worked closely with others already heavily involved in endoscopy training. This has given me the opportunity to work on some great projects. Two projects that I am particularly proud of include a UK-wide endoscopy trainer survey we had published in Frontline Gastro Journal, as well as a series of regional upper GI pathology training days that we set up as part of our regional training academy that were awarded the Improving Gastro Training Prize at BSG Live this year.

Why were you interested in taking up the JETS clinical lead role?

A few things led me towards taking up the JETS role. Since being involved in delivering endoscopy training at a local and regional level, I felt I had good awareness of the challenges and experiences of trainees and trainers. By using JETS data to evaluate the impact of our regional academy’s immersion blocks and planning new projects, I thought I had some insight into how ePortfolio data could be used to quality assure the implementation of regional academies and ensure equity of access for trainees. With recent work with the JETS team on the Reflection Tool and trainer development work, I had some familiarity with how endoscopy training is structured from the national perspective.

What are you most looking forward to in this role?

I’m excited to join a team who are really enthusiastic about making the most of the fantastic JETS ePortfolio. I’m looking forward to being involved in the exciting pieces of work on the near horizon with the evolution of regional academies and increasing focus on GI bleed and therapeutic training, as well as helping ensure the JETS ePortfolio reflects the changing needs and challenges for those learning endoscopy.

The Joint Advisory Group on GI Endoscopy (the JAG) wishes to appoint a chair of the National Endoscopy Database (NED) committee. JAG invites application from persons interested in taking up this important role in leading and shaping NED.

The JAG is hosted by the Royal College of Physicians (RCP). The RCP is a patient-centred and clinically led organisation whose core mission is to improve patient care and reduce illness. Our vision is for everyone to have the best possible health and healthcare.

The Care Quality Improvement Department supports the RCP’s strategic aim to improve care for patients. It utilises a variety of methods and approaches to drive improvements in activities, influences the quality of clinical practice via ambitious work programmes that are delivered via constituent teams. JAG aims to promote similar change and improvement in all endoscopy services, whilst also providing assurance to patients, managers, referrers, and commissioners about the service provided.

The NED chair will work in partnership with the JAG programme manager (based at the Royal College of Physicians) to ensure the successful delivery of NED. Working with the JAG Programme Manager you will be responsible for the delivery of the NED project and leading its governance within JAG. You will oversee developments of NED, work with stakeholders to highlight benefits and maximise opportunities for investment and support of NED.

The appointment will be for two years, renewable for a further year by agreement, and will be funded up to £12,000 per annum (up to 1PA), reimbursable to the post-holder’s employer.

Paul Collins is a consultant gastroenterologist at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. He is a luminal gastroenterologist with an interest in inflammatory bowel disease and rare hereditary GI polyposis syndromes.

He has a strong interest in medical education and has previously been the training programme director for gastroenterology for the Mersey scenery. In this role, Paul was a member of the JRCPTB Specialist Advisory Committee for Gastroenterology and a member of the The British Society Of Gastroenterology (BSG) Training Committee.

Paul was appointed as the director of the Mersey School of Endoscopy in 2020. Since its formation in 2022, he has been the operational lead for the North West Endoscopy Academy. Within this role, he has been proud to be part of a large team that have been able to focus on improving the delivery of training and education for the whole of the endoscopy workforce in the North West.

Paul is looking forward to the challenges of his role with the JAG Federation of training centres and working with the other members of the committee, the regional training centres and the JAG team to support the further development of our activities.
